Information about Lying in State and Funeral Service for President Václav Havel at Prague Castle

Procession to Prague Castle and Lying in State in the Vladislav Hall, Wednesday, 21 December 2011

The Office of the President of the Czech Republic announces that the coffin of the Former President Václav Havel will be carried in ceremonial procession on Wednesday, December 21, to Prague Castle. The procession will depart from the Barracks of Prague Castle Guard at 10am in Loretánská street and will continue via Hradčany square to enter Prague Castle through the Giants’ gate and the first, the second and the third courtyards of the Old Royal Palace. The coffin of President Havel will be then placed on a catafalque and displayed in the Vladislav Hall.

The highest representatives of the Czech Republic are going to gather in the Vladislav Hall on this occasion to honor the first Czech President. The President of the Czech Republic Václav Klaus will have a speech.

On Wednesday, 21 December 2011, the public will be able to watch the ceremonial procession from Hradčany square and from the first courtyard and the second courtyard of Prague Castle. The gathering in the Vladislav Hall will be broadcasted live and transmitted on large screens place on the second courtyard of Prague Castle and on Hradčany square.

After the solemn gathering, the Vladislav Hall of the Old Royal Palace of Prague Castle will be accessible to the public from 1pm until the evening hours (at least until 8pm) on Wednesday, 21 December 2011, and from 8am until 8pm on Thursday, 22 December 2011.

The access to the Vladislav Hall for the public will be possible through the second courtyard of Prague Castle, Na Vikárce street and Jiřské square.

Funeral Service for President President Václav Havel in St Vitus Cathedral, Friday, 23 December 2011 

On Friday, 23 December 2011, from 12am until 2pm, the funeral service will take place in St Vitus Cathedral at Prague Castle, in which the highest representatives of the Czech Republic, heads of states and governments and other eminent guests from the Czech Republic and from abroad are going to participate. The main celebrant will be Mons. Dominik Duka OP, Archbishop of Prague.

The public will be able to watch the funeral service live on large screens placed on the second courtyard of Prague Castle and on Hradčany square.
