Martie Haselton je profesorkou komunikace a psychologie na Kalifornské univerzitě v Los Angeles (UCLA), kde vede studijní program pro první ročníky s názvem Sex: From Biology to Gendered Society a předsedá Výboru pro akademickou svobodu. Jako evoluční socioložka je známá vytvořením teorie error managementu jako vysvětlení celé škály kognitivních zkreslení. Je autorkou knihy Hormonal. Její výzkum je pravidelně publikován v médiích jako např. The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal a National Public Radio. Byla hostem Good Morning America a The View.

Martie G. Haselton is Professor of Communication and Psychology at UCLA, where she leads the freshman cluster Sex: From Biology to Gendered Society and chairs the Committee on Academic Freedom. An evolutionary social scientist, she is known for developing error management theory as an account of a wide range of cognitive biases and is the author of the book Hormonal (Little, Brown). Her research is regularly featured in outlets such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and National Public Radio, and she has been interviewed on Good Morning America and The View.

Science-popularizing lecture from the series Science at the Prague Castle

Jsou muži a ženy tak odlišní v zásadních věcech? Po celá desetiletí se zdvořile říkávalo, že takřka vůbec. Na univerzitách i v tisku jsou rozdíly pohlaví mnohdy odbývány pouze jako pozůstatky patriarchátu, důsledek nedostatečných výzkumných metod nebo populárně vědecký humbuk. Důkazy ovšem hovoří o něčem jiném. Na základě teorie rodičovské investice a dat shromážděných v průběhu desítek let se přednášející pokusí ukázat, v čem jsou velké i malé rozdíly. Mnoho rozdílů odráží evoluční specializace (často odlišná řešení) na různé úkoly reprodukce, kterým ženy a muži čelili v průběhu evoluce. Ignorování těchto důkazů má své následky: v biomedicíně zaměřené na ženy, současném sexuálním chování, politikách na pracovištích a také ve tvorbě nových technologií.

Are men and women different in ways that matter? For decades, the polite answer has been "barely." In universities and the popular press, sex differences are often dismissed as relics of patriarchy, poor research methods, or pop-science hype — but the evidence tells a different story. Drawing on parental investment theory and decades of data, I show where the differences are small and where they are large. I make the case that many larger differences reflect evolved specializations — often distinct solutions — to the different tasks of reproduction that women and men have faced over evolutionary time. Ignoring this evidence has costs: in women's biomedicine, in modern mating, in workplace policy, and in how we build technology.
