Day of Architecture Festival
Prague Castle is joining the 15th annual Architecture Day festival this year.
On Saturday, October 4, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the New Orangery in the Royal Garden, normally closed to the public, will be open to visitors.
The New Orangery is located on Střelecká Road, which runs along the southern edge of the Royal Garden. It was designed by world-renowned architect Eva Jiřičná, a representative of the British high-tech style, famous for her work with glass and steel. The building was constructed between 1995 and 1999 on the initiative of Olga Havlová and replaced a deteriorating greenhouse from the 1950s. The elegant semi-cylindrical tube adjoins the Renaissance wall of the original orangery and stands out with its sophisticated stainless steel and tempered glass construction. Thanks to its division into three climate zones, the Orangery is used to grow citrus, exotic, and indoor plants, some of which decorate the interiors of Prague Castle. During the summer months (May to September), many of these plants are exposed to the sun in the area near the Orangery. The interior is also decorated with fountains by architects Jože Plečnik and Otto Rothmayer. The building is not only a functional greenhouse, but also an example of cutting-edge contemporary architecture that sensitively ties in with the historical context of the site.
The program is organized by the Prague Castle Administration in cooperation with the Architecture Day festival.
