Student Exhibition – Adaptation of the Stable Courtyard at Prague Castle

From 9 to 25 June 2026, Prague Castle, in cooperation with ARCHIP University College, presents an exhibition of ten student architectural projects exploring possible future uses of the historic Stable Courtyard. The exhibition is held in the foyer of the Lecture Hall of the Supreme Burgrave’s House at Prague Castle. Visitors have the opportunity to view architectural models and portfolios showcasing a variety of approaches to designing a modern visitor centre within one of Europe’s most significant historic sites.

The projects were developed under the supervision of architect and educator Zuzana Drahotová in collaboration with the Prague Castle Administration. They reflect contemporary architectural thinking, sensitivity to historical context, and the needs of today’s visitors. At ARCHIP, Zuzana Drahotová leads the Architectural Design Studio, which focuses on concept-driven architectural design, model making, drawing, and exploring the meaning of architecture through space and detail.

The Stable Courtyard as a Design Brief: A Historic Site in a New Context
The assignment challenged students to explore the potential adaptation of the building complex within the Stable Courtyard, located on U Prašného mostu Street, into a new visitor centre for Prague Castle. Situated along one of the main access routes to the Castle grounds, the site offers the potential to become a space providing visitors not only with entrance and information services, but also facilities, orientation, and a place to rest before or after their visit. At the same time, through its programme and activities, it could also serve and attract local residents.

The Stable Courtyard complex consists of several historic buildings, including the gardeners’ house, a Renaissance building that once contained a secret imperial passageway, and a former ball game hall that was transformed over the centuries into a theatre, stables, and later garages. Layering of history and the changing uses of the site became key themes in the students’ proposals.
