Speaker: Jakub Kastl
Jakub Kastl is a Professor of Economics at Princeton University, Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research and Research Fellow at the Center for Economic Policy Research. His research is in the field of industrial organization, finance and microeconomics. He is a recipient of the Sloan Fellowship and was awarded several grants by the National Science Foundation. His recent work studies financial markets and platforms. He has worked with the European Central Bank, the Bank of Canada, or the US Department of Treasury. He was involved in the design and performance evaluation of various auction markets ranging from treasury bill auctions to spectrum auctions. Jakub received his Ph.D. and M.A. degrees in Economics from Northwestern University, and his B.A. from Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic.

Science-popularizing lecture from the series Science at the Prague Castle
This lecture will explore the latest developments in measuring market power and examines how various antitrust authorities in the United States tackle this critical issue. Through illustrative examples, we will explore the process of constructing economic models to assess and quantify the harm caused to consumers and competing firms by entities that exploit their market power. We will begin with an analysis of horizontal mergers and conclude with an investigation into the growing influence of consumer data collection in amplifying market power.
